Protecting your computer!
Common sense and a little knowledge can help you keep your computer running. Don't click in pop-up windows unless you know who they are from and what they will do, especially if they offer to fix something in your computer. If in doubt, call someone and ask before you click. Once malware of any kind is installed on your computer, it may be difficult to contain or get rid of.
Spy-ware, Ad-ware and Trojans are a big problem with today's computers.
John suggests that you update your
- Windows security updates including Microsoft Office security updates if you use Microsoft Office.
- Use up-to-date anti-virus software,
- Have an up-to-date firewall
- Use Anti-Spyware and adware detection software, consider anti-fishing protection, especially on web sites you have questions about.
Never disable your anti-virus because a pop-up window tells you to. Some bugs have been known to tell the user they can fix their computer, but they must disable their anti-virus software first.
If you computer is very slow, you cannot browse where you wish to
browse, are you seeing unexpected pop-ups? You should see a technician
as soon as possible. The situation will probably get worse if not
serviced.
This may not be a spyware problem. Microsoft has increased its memory requirements with the latest Windows XP updates.
